You may have caught our recent blog, explaining how we went to visit the lovely pigs that feast on our spent brewers grain. We felt so connected and inspired by our visit and newfound friendship, we decided that ‘Davey Brown’, the boar, needed to be memorialized in some way. So in true Totnes Brewing Co. fashion, we made him a beer!
How could we not share this lovely compliment from over on our Facebook page…?
“We don’t really need finings in beer as you, The Master brewers and finest perveyor’s of the perfect pint have clearly demonstrated!!! Accepted it does change the characteristics of the pint however you have brought about a revolution in the art of brewing which has been scarcely seen or experienced in recent times! You have achieved a land mark in this industry! Please keep up the amazing work! Cheers and thank you!”

Introducing a brand new brew to the bar, ‘Ella…’ The second of our bartender inspired beers here at The Totnes Brewing Co.

There is a lot of back and forth at the moment in the world of Brewing. One of the bigger craft breweries, Cloudwater Brew Co. very much heralded for their innovative approach to brewing, has decided to cease selling their beers on cask, while concentrating on the bottle and can consumer market…
Whilst to many beer lovers, this comes as somewhat of a blow, others within the industry itself, have gone on to applaud their decision, suggesting that the discerning drinker has not been receiving the best quality of cask beer for some time. That being said, the author did go on to say, that where some establishments are getting it right, cask drinking is still fantastic…
From this blog that rattled many cages, a response came from another very well established craft brewery, Tiny Rebel in Wales, who actually offered the most balanced response of all, in our opinion…
And then comes the standpoint of Sirencraft Brew, who at the moment, will still continue their cask distritbution, and are happy that this decision is the best move for their beer, and their customers…
So there you have it, the story so far of #Caskgate
Some stunning new additions to the spirits shelves this week, check out these beauties!
‘TEELING SMALL BATCH’ Irish blended. 47%
“Our Flagship Irish whiskey and our attempt to create the most interesting Blended Irish whiskey. This small batch bottling consists of hand selected casks which are given further maturation in ex-rum barrels imparting extra character and smooth flavour unique to Irish whiskey. By bottling at 46% with no chill filtration completes an Irish whiskey of true character.
An inviting nose where vanilla and spice dances with bright sweet notes of Rum.
While being very approachable the influence of the rum cask and higher percentage alcohol creates a unique smooth, sweet, slightly woody marriage that sparkles on the tongue.
Slightly moorish, sweet spice finish complimented by woody undertones.”
‘TEELING SINGLE GRAIN’ 46%
“Single Grain – Recently Awarded World’s Best Grain at the World Whiskies Awards, 2014. This award-winning addition is one of only a handful of Single Grain Bottlings in the world.
It is fully matured in Californian red wine barrels resulting in an intensely fruity and beautifully amber liquid, with lush berry notes.
Hand selected casks, bottled at 46% with no chill filtration to ensure all the unique flavour is captured.
Spice and fruit notes mingle with an underlying sweet nose.
Strong spice at the start developing into lush red berries and grapes, with drying tannin effect at the end.
Dry finish dominated by wood and spice.
‘LAPHROAIG 10 YEAR OLD’ 40%
“The original Laphroaig, distilled the same way today as when Ian Hunter invented it over 75 years ago.
In making Laphroaig, malted barley is dried over a peat fire. The smoke from this peat, found only on Islay, gives Laphroaig its particularly rich flavour.
Those enjoying the 10 Year Old will first notice the bold, smoky taste, followed by a hint of seaweed and a surprising sweetness. This full-bodied variant is the foundation of all Laphroaig expressions and comes with a long finish.”
‘BENROMACH SPEYSIDE 10 YEARS OLD’ Singe Malt 43%
“Pour yourself a dram of Benromach – not too wee and not too big. Swirl the golden liquid around your glass and notice the AROMA WITHOUT WATER. In other words, take a sniff. Indeed, indulging in several little inhalations is the best way to pick up all the different notes… rich sherry with fruit & nut chocolate, delicate spice, green apples, malty biscuit and a touch of light peat smoke. Now sip your dram, roll the whisky around your mouth and enjoy the TASTE WITHOUT WATER… juicy raspberries and brambles, sherry, creamy malt and a light peat. Next, take in the AROMA WITH WATER… it’s a wee bit nutty with a touch of charred oak and malt, and there’s also some fancy pineapple and kiwi. Add a drop or two of water to release the full TASTE WITH WATER. Savour the succulent mouth coating and taste the toasted malt, delicate peat smoke and lingering sweet sherry… our gorgeous classic Benromach Speyside style of single malt whisky. What aromas and tastes do you sense?”

Colorful, rich, complex. It’s a way of sipping the history, the spirit, the stormy energy of the island, and of tasting the lively soul.
The Rum is Chris Blackwell’s personal way of introducing you to the authentic life force and character of the island he loves and knows inside out. The Blackwell family recipe is an original fusion of traditional ‘heavy pot’ dark rum with a distinct “Black Gold” style that creates the perfect, elegant blend of depth, character and smoothness guaranteed to bewitch connoisseurs, enthusiasts and Rum newcomers alike.”
